Server restored
This web site is now running on the proper server again, after several days
of living on my home PC.
Once I got through to the on-site support staff (after my support contract purchase went through - I didn't have one, hence the low cost of hosting here), they attempted to recover the root filesystem. However it was too badly corrupted to fix quickly, so I took the "reinstall from scratch" option.
That was done yesterday. The problem I then had was getting about 1GB of data back on to the server over my 200kbps upstream connection, while leaving enough bandwidth left over for services to continue running on my home PC in the meantime - that took up the whole night.
So, this evening I re-synced the data, halted services, juggled the DNS, and it's all back up and running.
The cause of the crash was a "routine" kernel upgrade, of the sort that had worked perfectly well several times in the past; this time, it failed and caused severe filesystem corruption. As a precaution, backups are now being run more frequently than before, and we'll just have to see whether doing that eats up too much CPU and bandwidth.
With that out of the way, I can now go back to worrying about the house I'm trying to buy.
