12:20 PM Dies Natalis Solis Invicti
This was going to be an entry comparing Christmas with the Roman festival of the birth of the undefeated sun, but you may as well just read about it in the Wikipedia entry on Sol Invictus.

7:37 PM Employed
Recently I left the world of self employment and took up a permanent position at a large retail company headquartered in Bury. Instead of an "I.T. Contractor" I am now officially a "Red Hat Linux Administrator". Since I have a couple of clients who have historically relied quite a bit on my services, I am also a contractor out-of-hours, as well as maintaining this web server.

It keeps me off the streets, in more ways than one. Also:

As you can see I've also been learning to use (well, playing around with) a package called Inkscape. It's very good, my only gripes are that (1) it has no facilities for animation that I can find, and (2) my screen isn't large enough - 1024x768 just doesn't cut it.

4:18 PM Another new blog
I've decided to give Google's Blogger a try, instead of my own set of scripts that I've been using to maintain this journal. We'll see how it goes. If nothing else, their WYSIWYG HTML editor is pretty impressive (in Firefox, at least).

Since the Blogger system is handling captchas and all that sort of thing, it's even feasible to enable comments on here.

12:27 AM Ranting
Oddly enough, complaining about a problem inside a closed community doesn't do anything to fix it. Instead there's this nifty little device that sends a message that gets read by the person who can investigate. How about that.
